Why alternative provision is more important than ever…
Across England, more and more children are finding that mainstream education doesn’t meet their needs. This isn’t because they lack talent or aspiration. It’s because the system isn’t always able to provide the right environment, flexibility, or support.
The reality of school absence
In 2024, over 170,000 pupils were classed as “severely absent” because they missed at least half their lessons. Almost 1.5 million children were “persistently absent,” meaning they missed at least 10% of their school time. Some estimates suggest that up to 300,000 children may be missing education altogether.
Behind every statistic is a child. Many are struggling with anxiety, unmet SEND needs, health issues or difficulties at home. For them, school can become a place of stress rather than support.
Why alternative provision exists
Alternative provision offers a different pathway. Smaller groups, specialist staff and flexible approaches mean children can feel safe, supported and ready to re-engage. It isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about creating the conditions for children to thrive.
Meeting needs, changing futures
For some, AP provides a bridge back into mainstream education. For others, it’s a long-term solution that allows them to gain qualifications, build confidence and prepare for the future. Without it, too many young people risk being left behind.
Our commitment at Entire Club
